How to open a bank account for a new business?

You can apply online for a bank account for your new business. It’s usually a quick process, but you might need to talk to someone on the phone if your circumstances are a bit different. When you’ve chosen the bank you want to apply to, go to their online application process for more information about set up.Whether you’re opening a current account or savings account, you’ll usually need to provide:

  • Companies House registration number.
  • Details about your business, including tax information, turnover and capital.
  • Details of all directors or partners, including name, date of birth, address and National Insurance numbers.

How long does it take to open a new business bank account?

Traditional banks will usually get you set up in 24 hours, and you’ll probably need to wait a few days to receive your card through the post. Online banks like Mettle and Monzo will usually be faster, often promising to get you set up in minutes.

Can startups get a business overdraft?

New businesses can get an arranged overdraft with their bank, but it will usually involve a credit check or a strict limit. Your bank will let you know what’s possible in your particular circumstances.

Can you switch your business bank account down the road?

You’re free to switch your bank account if your balance is in credit. Many traditional banks offer free banking for a specific period for new business customers, so there can be an added benefit to switching to an account that suits your needs better.

Can you get free business banking as a startup?

Many banks offer a free introductory offer for new businesses, so you can often get at least 12 months of free banking if you’re a new startup. Some mobile accounts are free if your balance stays about a certain value.

How much do new business bank accounts cost?

The large majority of business bank accounts will charge a monthly fee, and some charge for extra account transactions too. The monthly fee usually ranges from £5-15, but it can be more. There may also be a one-off set-up fee, which can cost anything from £10-70, but this is fairly unusual.Online banks generally charge a monthly fee that covers the majority of account management, but traditional banks will often charge separately for specific withdrawals, payments between countries, and requesting a new card.
