Purchasing new or used assets for your business can be costly and can affect your cash flow which often many businesses find difficult, but the asset is needed for the business and may improve efficiency.
Asset finance has been designed to help businesses to spread the cost of the asset over an agreed period or to lease the asset for an agreed period whilst benefiting from the asset.
At the end of the agreed period on some asset finance products, you may be able to own the asset and on others, you won’t but you may be able to extend the rental period. Below we have explored what the leading providers can offer.

How does asset finance work?
Asset finance allows businesses to benefit from an asset without the upfront cost of purchasing the asset. An agreed term is arranged for the business to have the asset in return for a fixed monthly payment. What happens to the asset at the end of the term depends on the type of asset finance product used.
Hire purchase, also sometimes called lease purchase, allows the business to hire the asset for the term of the agreement and at the end of the term they can purchase the ownership of the asset.
A finance lease, also sometimes called a capital lease, allows businesses to rent the asset for a fixed amount over an agreed period which may cover the cost of the asset. At the end of the term, the asset will be sold, and some providers may share a percentage of the sale value with the business renting it. The business may also benefit from being able to offset the rental payments against the profits depending on the lease type and the asset.
Equipment leasing is similar to a finance lease as it offers a rental period for an asset but at the end of the rental period, there is the option to extend the lease, choose to upgrade, purchase the asset or return the asset to the provider. Equipment leasing can be offset against profit to reduce tax.
Operating leasing is similar to equipment leasing but tends to cater for specialist equipment or machinery which tends to be for short to medium periods.
Residual value lease is similar to the other lease options but it takes into account the depreciation of the asset and what its residual value will be. It protects you from the risk of the asset losing value and it can reduce your monthly payments.
Contract hire, also called vehicle asset finance, specialises in vehicle financing only. The business hires a vehicle over an agreed lease period with maintenance and servicing included. At the end of the leasing period, the vehicle is returned to the provider.
Refinancing of assets can be done in two ways by using the asset as security in a loan or through asset-based lending. Asset-based lending is where the asset is sold to the finance provider for an agreed amount and then they lease the asset to repay the loan.
Business Asset Finance FAQ
How much can I borrow?
The amount you can borrow will depend on the value of the asset and the provider.
Some providers have minimum borrowing amounts such as £1,000 or £5,000 but others are much higher.
Those providers advertising their loan amounts often don’t give an upper limit but those that do often offer up to £2-5 million.
How much will asset finance cost?
Most asset finance providers do not include the cost of their asset finance products on their websites and you will need to contact them to get a quote or complete their online quote tool.
There are a few providers that state an annual interest charge of 5-10% on their asset finance products.
Some product fees or arrangement fees may also apply.
How long can I borrow money for?
The loan terms on asset finance products vary depending on the product, the asset and the provider. Typically, terms can range from 1 year through to 5-7 years, although there are a few providers that offer up to 10 years.
However, the length of the term is most importantly linked to the asset and what the most appropriate term is for the asset life span.
How to apply for asset finance?
Most asset finance providers want to discuss your needs with them and work out which product will be the best for you, so they request that you contact them over the phone or request a callback on their website. Some providers include the option to apply online on their website.
If you apply for refinancing there will be additional stages in the application process as they will need to complete an assessment of your asset value which may require a survey.
